Hiking and Mountain Biking
 Hiking
and mountain biking are favorite
pastimes for both residents and visitors
to
Ashe County NC. There are several
hiking and mountain biking trails in
Ashe County. Some of the best trails
are found at the area parks like New
River State Park, or on the Blue Ridge
Parkway, which runs through Ashe County
NC.
Hike the Spur Trail, Farmhouse Loop
trail, Fern Nature Trail, Running Cedar
Trail and the Hickory Trail at New River
State Park. New River State Park is
located in Ashe and Alleghany counties.
The Wagoner Road Access, at river mile
26, is located eight miles southeast of
Jefferson. It can be reached by Wagoner
Access Road off NC 88, 1.2 miles east of
the intersection of NC 16 and NC 88. The
US 221 Access Area, at river mile 15, is
located eight miles northeast of
Jefferson, and may be reached by US 221.
The Lump Trail is located on the Blue
Ridge Parkway and is at Milepost 264.4. Also on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the
Thompson Knob Trail found at Milepost
272.5 and both are known for being very
easy hiking trails. For a beautiful
view of a hidden vista, hike the Jumping
off Rocks Trail at the Blue Ridge
Parkway Milepost 260.3. The Jumping off
Rocks Trail is a one mile easy hike
through a forest. For a harder hike try
the Summit Trail at Mount Jefferson
State Park which is a strenuous hike up
Mount Jefferson, the highest peak in
Ashe County.
Bluff Mountain is a special place in
Ashe County and is known for being one
of the most unspoiled places in the
area. Hiking and recreation in this
area is coordinated through the Nature
Conservancy. Anyone wishing to hike or
enjoy this area needs to contact the
Nature Conservancy first.
Railroad Grade Road is a favorite among
locals and biking enthusiasts. This two
lane, paved road is a favorite because
it runs along the New River and has
few inclines or turns. In fact,
it is chosen year after year as the
location for bike races and starting
points for mountain biking guided
trips. Search through the listings
