Ashe County Arts
 The
arts and crafts community of Ashe County
has long thrived and been a source of
expression for the people of the area.
The Appalachian culture places
importance on arts and crafts which
serve as an expression of their way of
life, therefore Ashe County has become
an arts and crafts hub in the High
Country.
Take a moment and walk down Main Street
in downtown West Jefferson and you’ll
notice the gorgeous wall murals and
paintings displayed for all to enjoy.
Downtown West Jefferson is home to many
galleries and is a great place to start
your journey for Ashe County art, as it
is part of the newly named “West
Jefferson arts district”. After spending
the day browsing through the many
galleries downtown, take time to visit
some of the lesser known ones off the
beaten path. There are several Ashe
County art galleries that feature
various types of art and sculpture, many
of which are located throughout the
county and may not have locations
downtown in West Jefferson.
Ashe County is especially known for its
beautiful Church of the Frescoes mural
art done in both St. Mary’s Episcopal
Church and the Holy Trinity Episcopal
Church. Artist Ben Long spent much time
and effort, and as a result the Churches
of the Frescoes draw thousands each year
as people love to view these gorgeous
creations.
Handcrafted work and art are not all
that
Ashe County has to offer - mountain
music has long been a tradition in Ashe
County and continues today as well, with
both the Todd General Store and Mountain
Music Jamboree featuring music and
storytelling.
